Play Gomoku with the rules at hand

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Gomoku. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Treat the first round as a chance to learn the controls. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

A small practice goal

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Keep the objective visible.

What you need to achieve

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

Your inputs

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. A new-round button replaces the current round.

Put the rules into context

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Choose a deliberate next step.

Keep this in mind

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
